St. Augustine is literally packed with attractions of all kinds, from historic sites
to family amusements. Chief among them is the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas,
wonderful remnants of St. Augustine's Spanish heritage. Many other St. Augustine
attractions pay tribute to the area's long history, such as the Lightner Museum and
the Oldest Schoolhouse. We've listed the best of St. Augustine attractions below, so
be sure to plan to visit several of them.
Castillo de San Marcos
The Castillo de San
Marcos, built 1672-1695, served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire, guarding St.
Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States. The
Castillo was made a National Monument in 1924 and became part of the National Park system
in 1933. The park consists of the original historic Castillo fortress itself with its
attendant grounds, some 25 total acres. Each room or casemate within the fort focuses on a
different theme or time period of the Castillo de San Marcos such as "The building of the
Castillo", "Battles", "Artillery", and "Native Americans". Additionally, some rooms have
been furnished to represent a Spanish barracks, British barracks, and storeroom. Various
Spanish iron and bronze artillery pieces are exhibited on the gundeck or terreplein (roof).
Fort Matanzas
Throughout
its history, the story of Fort Matanzas has been closely intertwined with that of the city
of St. Augustine and the Castillo de San Marcos. This Spanish outpost fort was built to
guard the Matanzas Inlet and to warn St. Augustine of British or other enemies approaching
from the south. The fort represents a very well-preserved masonry watchtower fort built by
the Spanish from 1740 to 1742. The tall tower provided a perch to observe vessels approaching
St. Augustine from the south, and the cannon blocked potential enemy advancements up the
Matanzas River, the backdoor to St. Augustine. Fort Matanzas now serves as a reminder of the
early Spanish empire in the New World.
The Lightner Museum
Relics of America's Gilded
Age are elegantly exhibited on the museum's three floors. Costumes, furnishings, mechanical
musical instruments and other artifacts give you a glimpse into 19th century daily life. The
Lightner collection includes beautiful examples of cut glass, Victorian art glass and the
stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
